Coyote flag football falls to Ottawa

OTTAWA – Ottawa outscored Kansas Wesleyan 27-7 in the second half as the Braves would come away with a 47-19 win over the Coyotes on Friday night at AdventHealth Field.

Ottawa got on the board first with 8:11 to go in the first quarter, but the Coyotes scored with 1:53 to go in the first as Sabrina Saldate (JR/Las Vegas, Nev.) would run for eight yards before lateralling to Brianna Hernandez-Silva (JR/Las Vegas, Nev.) for the final three yards of the play to score making it 7-6 after the failed conversion.

The Braves scored again with 5:59 left in the second quarter, and Wesleyan quickly responded on the next drive. The Coyotes went 66 yards in six plays, a 54-yard chunk on a Saldate pass to Ghariana Green (FR/Dunedin, Fla.) that gave KWU a first and goal at Ottawa's 12. Saldate would find Meganne Morrand (JR/Manhattan, Kan.) for the touchdown pass with 2:17 to go to make it 13-12 Ottawa after a failed conversion.

Ottawa would score again in the second with 1:33 left to take a 20-12 lead into the half.

After a Ottawa score to open the second half, the Coyotes got a 3 yard TD pass from Hernandez-Silva to Ja'Daa Wilson (FR/Crawfordville, Fla.) with 4:43 to go in the third to make it 27-19.

That was as close as it got the rest of the way as Ottawa scored 20 unanswered points to pull away for the 47-19 win.

Hernandez-Silva had 79 yards rushing on eight attempts with a score to lead the Coyotes on the ground. Saldate was 12 of 31 passing for 148 yards with a touchdown, but threw five interceptions on the day.

Wilson had five catches for 59 yards to lead the KWU receivers.

Reagan Martin (FR/San Manuel, Ariz.) had eight flag pulls to lead the KWU defense.

KWU plays again next Saturday in the KCAC Postseason Invitational at Saint Mary. The Coyotes will play Cottey College at 10 a.m.
