MANHEIM, Pa. - The Fort Hays State wrestling team moved up to 15th in the latest National Wrestling Coaches Association NCAA Division II Coaches Poll, released Friday.
After defeating the previously top-ranked wrestler at 125 pounds last week, Tiger sophomore Mason Turner moved up to the top spot in the country in the latest rankings release. Turner is 9-1 on the season, including five wins via pin and three tech fall victories. He leads the Tigers in both categories and is tied for fifth in both categories in Division II.
Senior A.J. Cooper maintained his position as the eighth-ranked wrestler at 285 pounds. Cooper is also 9-1 on the year and is tied with Turner with five wins via pin this year.
With the NCAA Division II Super Region IV Championships looming Feb. 28 in Edmond, Okla., the NWCA also released a set of regional rankings. Fort Hays State has eight wrestlers ranked in the top six of their weight class. Super Region IV is made up of 10 teams, including FHSU, Central Missouri, Drury, Kentucky Wesleyan, Lindenwood, Maryville, McKendree, Newman and Ouachita Baptist.
Turner is the top-ranked wrestler in the region at 125 pounds, with Broderick Green (133), Cole Zebley (149) and Anthony Scantlin (157) all coming in sixth in their respective classes. Nick Lucas is listed fifth at 165 pounds, with Marty Verhaeghe (174) and Tereus Henry (197) both slotted fourth in the region. Cooper comes in as the second-ranked wrestler at 285 pounds.
