NEW ORLEANS, La. - After two weeks of action in the 2021 outdoor track and field season, the Cloud County Community College track and field teams have cracked the top-five of the initial United States Track and Field Cross Country Coaches Association NJCAA Top-25 Polls released on Wednesday.
Holding down the number-four ranking on the women's side, CCCC earned a total of 487.47 points in the poll and trails only South Plains (575.07 points), New Mexico Junior College (526.85 points), and Barton (507.06 points) and is one of four Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference schools inside the top-10. The T-Birds have 15 national top-10 marks to their credit this year including the number two spot in the discus held by Marie Forbes (42.63 meters, 139 ft. - 11 in.). Forbes also ranks third in the shot put currently at 14.25 meters (46 ft. - 9 in.).
Over on the men's side of things, Cloud County holds down the number-five spot in the initial poll by coming in with 414.60 points and is nearly 100 points clear of number-six ranked Coffeyville Community College. South Plains holds down the top spot with 576.10 points, followed by Barton (553.84 points), New Mexico Junior College (536.38 points), and Iowa Central (458.21 points). CCCC has 13 national top-10 marks which include three national top-three marks from this past weekend with Daniel Cope ranking second in the discus (51.91 meters, 170 ft. - 4 in.) and number three in the hammer throw (58.24 meters, 191 ft. - 1 in.) along with Saba Khvichava in the 3,000 meter steeplechase (9:34.20).
This weekend's events will see the Cloud County women take a limited squad to the Bethel College Loren Reusser Invitational on Saturday, while the T-Bird men will travel to Canyon, Texas, to take part in the Jo Meaker Classic and Multi Events beginning on Friday.
