September 26, 1936 - July 26, 2021

James “Jim” Alton Brown, age 84, died July 26, 2021 in Manhattan, Kansas.  He was born to Louie D. and Velda M. (Dennis) Brown on September 26, 1936 on the family farm near Agra, Kansas.

Jim attended his first four years of grade school at Center School and finished the last four years at Agra Consolidated Grade School. He graduated from Agra Consolidated High School and joined the Kansas National Guard from 1954 to 1962. Jim was a 1959 graduated of Kansas State University earning a degree in feed tech.

He married Carol Lala on October 15, 1960.

Jim worked for Garvey Grain, California Pellet Mill Co., Supersweet Feeds, Courtland Construction, Key Milling Co., and Fourth & Pomeroy Associates. He retired in 1999 as principal owner of Key Feeds in Clay Center, Kansas. 

Jim and his wife Carol volunteered for International Executive Service Corp., where they spent six weeks in Egypt in 1991 and six weeks in Ukraine in 1994. He was active in the community and served on the Clay Center Development Board, president of the Clay Center Chamber of Commerce in 1987, and served 11 years on the City Council. Jim was on the Dean’s Advisory Council Kansas State University College of Ag, Milton S. Eisenhower Society Kansas State University, and a lifetime member of the KSU Alumni Association. He won the Outstanding Grain Science Graduate Award in 2010. 

Jim was heavily involved in the St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, where he served as  a Eucharistic Minister, Vestry, Reader, and the Altar Guild.  

He is preceded in death by his parents and on Steven Brond.

Wife: Carol Brown of Clay Center, KS

Son: Michael (Barbara) Brond of Liberal, KS

Daughter: Kim (Doug) Prideaux of Wichita, KS

Grandchildren: Jamie, Caleb, Caden, and Colton Brond

Celebration of Life: Monday, August 2, 2021 at 10:00 a.m. at the St Paul's Episcopal Church in Clay Center, KS

Burial: Will be held at a later date

Visitation: Sunday, August 1, 2021 from 2-4 p.m. at Neill-Schwensen-Rook Funeral Home in Clay Center, KS

Memorials: In lieu of flowers memorials can be made to the Clay Center Hospital Foundation in c/o Neill-Schwensen-Rook Funeral Home.

These funds will be directed in the hope of a future dialysis unit at the Clay County Medical Center.
