Sandra Nell McCune

Sandra Nell McCune, 88, of Wichita, died Friday, September 12, 2025 in Wichita, Kansas.

She was born on January 15,1937, in rural Clifton, Kansas, the daughter of Thomas Peterson and Lillian Margaret Wilkinson Slipsager. Sandra enjoyed school sports, quilting with her mother and being chaperoned by her brothers Ed or Leroy. Graduated Rural School in Clifton, KS. After, she moved to Manhattan, KS and graduated from the Manhattan Beauticians School.

 She met and married John W. Huett in Manhattan, Kansas. Sandra and John’s son Thomas, sadly passed at childbirth. They celebrated the birth of their daughter, Lori two years later in Ft. Benning, Georgia. Her love for travel blossomed as she traveled with John in his service with the Army. John passed while stationed in France from Cancer. She and Lori returned to Clifton, Kansas to be with family.

She met Ivan Tegethoff while working as a beautician in Washington, Kansas. They married and worked his family farm until Ivan was killed in a farming accident.

 She met Donald McCune through friends of the Washington Christian Church. Married and moved to Salina, Kansas. She worked in bookkeeping. Sandra and Don enjoyed traveling, spending time with their Granddaughters and cheering on her Great Nephew’s sports events. Don passed away from cancer.

She married a cousin of Don’s, Leland McCune. They continued to live in Salina. He had three sons from a previous marriage. Shortly after Leland’s death, Sandra moved to Wichita, Kansas to be closer to her daughter and Grandchildren. Where she attended Pathway Church. Quickly made new and close friendships while living at the Huntington Park Apartments. She enjoyed their scheduled coffee, games of dominoes and weekly trips of Wichita and surrounding areas.

Sandra’s travels included nearly every state and national park. Bus trips, cruises, and casinos to play the penny slots. She loved taking pictures of her adventures and celebrations, filling albums to remanence. Holidays and Birthday’s was her favorite time of year, celebrated with a favorite meal, followed by conversations and laughter around a board game or cards. Coffee was always brewing, as she enjoyed a good romance novel, puzzle, or conversations with friends. Her love of sports continued as she favored every Kansas college team, Royals and the Chiefs. Her most cherished time and role in her life was spent as a grandmother and great grandmother, celebrating their lives.

 Survivors include her daughter Lori Winter and husband Ron of Wichita. Her granddaughters LeAnne Hankins and husband Byron, Lyndsey Topham and husband Bradley, Lisa Winter and fiancé Kyle Black; along with her great grandchildren Austin Winter, Aaron Topham, and Winter Sue Black. Her niece’s Nancy Ohlde and family of Salina, KS. Barbara Gillette and family of Concordia, KS. Louie Finnicum and family of Dayton, Oregon.

She is preceded in death by her parents, brothers Edward and Leroy and sister Loretta. 

Sandra enjoyed spending time with her family and friends on her 85th birthday which she called her Celebration of Life.
