NEW ORLEANS, La. - Cloud County Community College men's track and field athlete Courtney Lawrence has been named United States Track and Field Cross Country Coaches Association NJCAA Division I Outdoor Athlete of the Week for his performance in the shot put at the 2021 Friends University Spring Open in Wichita on Saturday.
Lawrence would record a throw of 18.42 meters (60 ft. - 5.25 in.) while competing in the shot put in the first time during the outdoor season to record the ninth-best mark in NJCAA History. The throw not only would win the event among the 24-participant field, but also rank as the 12th-best shot put mark ever recorded at the NJCAA level regardless of season (indoor or outdoor). With the mark, Lawrence currently ranks second this season in the outdoor season behind only Fred Moudani of Barton who would record a throw of 18.79 meters (61 ft. - 7.75 in.).
The award marks the first time in program history that a male athlete from Cloud County has been named National Athlete of the Week during the outdoor season.
