After Crossroads Church members visited a Church Safety Seminar by Jimmy Meeks in Bennington, it inspired them to bring that valuable safety training to more Salina citizens.

Crossroads Church in Salina will host its own safety seminar event, with a free Women's Safety Seminar at 7 p.m. on Friday, April 19, and then a Church Safety Seminar from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Saturday.

"I would call it more than church safety, I'd call it group safety," said Jack Keller, congregation member at Crossroads.

Keller said much of what the women's seminar will focus on is nighttime safety information, like grabbing keys from a bag before walking out of a building and paying attention to the immediate surroundings.

Saturday's four-hour seminar will focus on administration and structures to keep groups safe, asking questions about safety during an active shooter or building an emergency action plan.

"Saturday is going to be geared more toward if you have brought experts into your organization, have you brought along the local police officers to key them in on a plan," Keller said.

Meeks plans to teach the attendees how to get local emergency services involved in safety plans for various group settings. His seminars draw from a 35-year career as a Texas police officer.

The women's seminar is free, while Saturday's seminar costs $35 for registration. Registration is online for those looking to participate in the workshop at www.sheepdogsafetytraining.com.
