A non-permitted garbage fire was the cause of a grass fire that completely destroyed a camper and scorched two acres of grass in Saline County Wednesday afternoon.

Saline County Undersheriff Brent Melander told Salina Post that deputies received a 911 call for reports of a fire at approximately 1:06 p.m. yesterday in the 1800 block of East 40 Highway.

Melander said when deputies arrived at the scene they discovered a 53-year-old male, of Salina, who had been burning trash in a burn pit in the area.

"It [the fire] got out of control and started the grass on fire," Melander said. "That quickly spread to some surrounding grass and there was an old camper sitting close by."

The camper, owned by a 49-year-old male from Salina,  caught fire and was completely destroyed. The camper was valued at $200.

Rural Fire District Five was on the scene to put out the flames.

Melander said a burn violation ticket was issued to the 53-year-old male who was burning trash. No injuries were reported.
