October 1, 1928 - July 7, 2021

Ferril Lee Heling, 92, of McPherson, KS, passed away at 4:15 p.m., Wednesday, July 7, 2021 while in the company of family members, at Veterans Administration Medical Center Wichita.

Ferril was born in Dodge City, Kansas on October 1, 1928, a son of Wanita I. (Jenkins) and Forrest F. Heling.

Ferril attended the Pratt grade schools and graduated from Pratt High School, Pratt, Kansas.

He was a member of First Christian Church Pratt, KS.

He honorably served in the U.S. Army Air Corps as a SSG in WW II, and then also served in the U.S. Air Force as a SSG in the Korean War.

Ferril Lee Heling was united in marriage to Dixie Lou Davies on September 11, 1973 at Pratt, Kansas. Dixie died on March 7, 1995.

Ferril began working for Rock Island Railroad in 1945 as a fireman. He retired in 1987 as locomotive engineer for Southern Pacific.

Ferril was a member of Masonic Lodge #72, McPherson; Salina Scottish Rite; Isis Temple Shrine, Salina; American Legion Post 24, and Elk's Lodge B.P.O.E. #502, both of McPherson. Ferril enjoyed hunting, boating, fishing, golfing, flying his planes, water and snow skiing, and his 5 o'clock tottie.

Ferril is survived by his daughters Debra Johnson, of Pratt, Kansas and Janet Heling, of Pratt, Kansas; his four grandchildren, Kimberly Seidel, Temple Briscoe, Amber Sprague, and Todd Startzman; his 10 great-grandchildren, Brittany Rector, Gunner DeClue, Bailey DeClue, Riley Howe, Shawna Baker, Brandi Briscoe, Kami Mortenson, Kelsi Constable, Jordan Sprague, and Cameron Startzman; his four great-great-grandchildren, Charlee Rector, James Baker, Allison Baker, and Jason Colon-Vega; other relatives and a host of friends.

Ferril was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Dixie; great-grandson Kaleb Mortenson; and his sister and brother-in-law Beverly and Gene Cockrell.

Graveside service will be held at Fairlawn Cemetery, Hutchinson, Kansas, at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, July 14, with Reverend Lynn Scott officiating. Military honors will be presented by members of the American Legion Post 24 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2715 and with Mark Casebeer playing taps.
