Salina Police Department (SPD) officers are investigating a theft that occurred on the afternoon of September 17 at the Pilot Travel Center near Interstate 70.

SPD officers responded to 2125 North Ninth Street in Salina at approximately 4:30 p.m. after a 74-year-old Colorado man reported being scammed out of $4,700.

According to Salina Police Captain James Feldman, the victim was approached by an individual who invited him to participate in a 3 Card Monte game, claiming that ten others were involved, each contributing the same amount of money.

The man initially put in $200 and won the first round. Encouraged by the win, he retrieved $4,500 from his vehicle and handed it, along with the original $200, to the suspect.

The suspect and several other individuals then fled the scene with the money.

The suspect is described as a white male, possibly driving a red Mercury van. There is no available video footage of the incident, and the victim was passing through Salina at the time, having stopped for gas.

Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the Salina Police Department.
