Obituary for Leroy "Lee" Munk | Ryan Mortuary

May 21, 1937 ~ August 6, 2022 (age 85)

Leroy "Lee" Munk, age 85, passed away peacefully in Salina on Saturday, Aug 6th, 2022.

He was born to Ted W Munk and Alexia (Walter) Munk and raised on the family farm near Walker, Kansas, in Ellis County.

Lee was an athlete as well as a scholar, graduating from Victoria High School and earning a football scholarship to St. Benedict's.  He graduated from Fort Hays State University, joined the National Guard, and trained to be a medic at Fort Sam Houston.

He married Norma Jean Engel at St. Joseph church in Hays in 1961. After earning a master’s degree from Emporia State University, he taught high school chemistry and biology and coached basketball in Derby, KS.

In 1967 Lee and Norma moved to Salina, Kansas, where he enjoyed a 40-year career as an agricultural pharmaceutical representative, and he and Norma raised their family.

Upon retirement, he spent time maintaining his properties and working with the Tractor Supply Company, where he enjoyed interacting with local farmers and ranchers. Lee enjoyed American History, gardening, backyard barbecues, getting up early to start his days, and a good movie.

Lee was defined by his love of family, his powerful work ethic, his well-mannered respectful nature, and his love of solitude.

His parents and sister, Charlene (Munk) Dreiling, preceded him in death. 

He is survived by his wife Norma Jean of 61 years, sister Terese Jones and her husband Doug, daughter Connie Williams and her husband Greg, son Curtis Munk and his wife Becky, and daughter Ilene Munk, and two grandsons Alex and Ian Gaekwad.

Visitation will be at Ryan Mortuary in Salina, from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m., on Wednesday, August 10th, with a rosary to follow from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m.  

The funeral mass will be at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, in Salina, on Thursday, August 11, at 10:00 a.m.

Burial will be at 3:00 p.m. in the family plot in St. Ann’s Cemetery in Walker, Kansas.

Memorials may be sent to St. Mary’s Church in Salina or St. Ann’s Church in Walker.

Lee touched many lives in a profound way, and he will be missed.
