Mary Ann’s life began on Sunday June 9, 1946, in Saugus, MA. She was the daughter of Arthur B. and Frances (Gerty) Holmes.

Her family moved to Kansas when she was young and it was here that she met and married Billy Smithhart on August 25, 1963, in Newton.

Mary Ann worked for several area businesses like Marion Manor and an egg processor in Newton but her favorite job was the eighteen plus years she made donuts at Carlson’s Grocery in Marion.

She loved visiting her family and she was the family caregiver. Mary Ann took care of both her parents at the end of their lives.

Her loving family includes her husband Billy of Marion; children Mary Frances Pankratz of Salina and Charles (Lori’Ann) Smithhart of Hillsboro; siblings Tommy (Chris) Holmes of Wichita and nephews and niece Sharon Mitchell, Stephen Smith, and Frank Smith.

Mary Ann passed away on Thursday, December 2, 2021, at NMC Health in Newton. She is preceded in death by her parents, sister Ellen Smith and brother Jimmy Holmes.

Her family will gather with friends to share stories on Friday, December 10, 2021, from 5-7 p.m. at Yazel Megli Funeral Home, Marion. She will be laid to rest in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Newton at a later date.

Mary Ann’s one wish for us all is that we all get vaccinated and memorial contributions in her name may be directed to NMC Health Foundation for use in the Critical Care Unit.
