Coyote Men's Indoor Track claims first-ever KCAC Championship title

OMAHA, Neb. - Kansas Wesleyan Men's Indoor Track and Field claimed its first-ever KCAC Championship title as the Coyotes won the 2025 KCAC Indoor Track Championships on Friday and Saturday at Lied Fitness Center.

"It was a total team effort for our guys," said KWU Head Coach Kyler Hiser. "We had a lot of guys step up and score some points for us in key areas, especially in the middle distances. Hats off to Coach (Garrett) Young for leading that group."

Hiser was named as the Coach of the Year, and Young was tabbed as the Assistant Coach of the Year.

The Coyotes used big performances in the middle distance races (600m, 800m, 1000m) to make the difference in the team standings. The Coyotes outscored Friends (second) and Saint Mary (third) 63-5-26 in those three races.

KWU won the meet with 141 points, while Friends finished second with 128.5 points, Saint Mary was third with 123.5, Evangel was fourth with 114 and McPherson was fifth with 65.5.

The Coyotes claimed meet champions in the 600m with Wyatt Johnson winning in 1:22.28. Julian Avila won the 1000m with a time of 2:27.95 which hit the NAIA B Standard. The 4x800m relay won the KCAC meet for a third straight year as the group of Wyatt Johnson, Triston Cottone, Ty Davidson and Julian Avila posted a time of 7:48.13 to win. Keegan Lott won the shot put on Friday with a mark of 15.74m.

Triston Cottone added a second place finish in the 600m as KWU went 1-2-4 in the event. Cottone ran a 1.23.08 while Nate Chavez was foufth with a time of 1:24.96.

Julian Avila was second in the 800m with a time of 1:57.01, Ty Davidson was third with a time of 1:57.38, Triston Cottone was fourth in 1:57.73 and Nicolas Martinez was 12th with a time of 2:02.43.

The Distance Medley Relay was second as the group of Jake Cruz, Kean Dinkel, Julian Avila and Austin Schaeffer finished with a time of 10:37.19.

Damion Jackson finished third in the mile with a time of 4:20.14. Austin Schaeffer was fourth in 4:23.77, Giovanni Rios was seventh in 4:26.55, Jake Cruz was ninth in 4:30.64, Landon Steeger was 12th in 4:38.22, Brodie Bradshaw was 20th in 4:53.06, Will Childers was 23rd in 5:01.19 and Jack Horacek was 26th in 5:06.39.

Damion Jackson was third in the 3000m with a time of 8:39.57, Evan Pearce was fifth in 8:51.09, Austin Hess was 11th in 9:00.68, Tim Parish was 12th in 9:04.42, Tytus Reed was 13th in 9:10.73, Cisco Alvarez was 15th in 9:25.54, and Landon Steeger was 16th in 9:30.99.

Damion Jackson was third in the 5000m with a time of 14:59.58, Austin Hess was sixth in 15:19.19, Jake Cruz was seventh in 15:25.52, Tytus Reed was 12th in 15:50.74, Cisco Alvarez was 16th in 16:17.70, Brodie Bradshaw was 19th in 16:56.22 and Jack Horacek was 23rd in 18:05.43.

Ty Davidson added a fourth place finish in the 1000m in 2:32.29, Nicolas Martinez was fifth in 2:34.56 and Ian Doss was seventh in 2:37.21.

Zamari Burrell finished fourth in the 60m with a time of 6.99 seconds in the finals, after qualifying fourth with a time of 7.02 seconds in the preliminaries.

The 4x400m relay team was fourth as the group of Wyatt Johnson, Nate Chavez, Triston Cottone and Ty Davidson finished with a time of 3:26.80.

Keegan Lott placed sixth in the weight throw with a mark of 15.28m, Keyon Baccus was 11th with a mark of 13.29m, Dylan Worrell was 18th with a mark of 11.79m and Austin Baird was 22nd with a mark of 11.37m.

Zamari Burrell posted a sixth place finish in the finals of the 200m with a time of 22.80 seconds.

Also in the 60m, Kean Dinkel was 10th in 7.09 seconds, Tyler Fontenot was 20th in 7.21, Darius Archuleta was 29th in 7.46, James Preston was 30th in 7.48 and Brennon Allen was 35th in 7.64 seconds.

Dylan Worrell added a 10th place finish in the shot put with a mark of 13.47m, Keyon Baccus was 17th with a mark of 12.51m and Austin Baird was 28th with a mark of 10.15m.

Tristan Howard was 12th in the 60m hurdle preliminaries with a time of 9.08 seconds and Cayden Purcell was 13th in 9.18 seconds.

In the 400m, Trevor Peal was 14th in 53.26 seconds, Andrew Smith was 15th in 53.57, Riley Garcia and DeJaylon Beal tied for 16th in 53.62 and Sidney Washington was 20th in 55.10 seconds.

In the long jump, Darius Archuleta was 14th with a mark of 6.39m, James Preston was 21st with a mark of 6.10m, Brennon Allen was 24th with a mark of 5.87m and Kamal Murphy was 26th with a mark of 5.74m.

Kamal Murphy was 14th in the triple jump with a mark of 12.59m.
