A local man with active warrants was arrested Tuesday evening after a brief foot chase in west Salina.

At approximately 6 p.m. officers were sent to the area of 1600 W. Republic Avenue for a welfare check. Witnesses had told police that a younger man with a gray hoodie was walking around aimlessly, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester reported this morning.

An officer saw someone fitting the description given and recognized him as Malique Powell, 24, of Salina. Powell had outstanding warrants from Saline Count District Court for probation violation, Forrester noted.

The officer lost sight of Powell, but a short time later, officers were dispatched to the same area for the same described person. An officer saw Powell at the intersection of Plum Drive and Hemlock Drive, at which time Powell allegedly ran from the officer.

Witnesses told police that Powell was behind the residence at 813 Hemlock Drive. As officers came upon that location, Powell allegedly ran south, however, officers were able to apprehend him after a foot chase.

During the arrest, Powell was found to allegedly be in possession of marajuana and drug paraphernalia. In addition to the warrants, Powell was arrested on the following requested charges, according to Forrester.

●Felony interference with law enforcement

●Possession of marijuana

●Possession of drug paraphernalia
