GREAT BEND – Kansas Wesleyan Softball saw its 2023 season come to a close on Wednesday as the Coyotes dropped a pair of games on the first day of the KCAC Softball Tournament at the Great Bend Sports Complex.

OKWU 2, KWU 0: The Coyotes struggled offensively in their tournament opener after not having played since April 22 when the Coyotes had their regular season finale.

KWU gave up single runs to OKWU in the first and second innings, which was the difference in the 2-0 game.

Sarah Sanders (JR/Hillsboro, Texas) walked in the third for KWU's first baserunner, and in the fourth Jocelyn Alcala (JR/Fullerton, Calif.) singled for KWU's only hit of the game.

FRIENDS 9. KWU 4: The Coyotes got the bats going in the game against Friends, but couldn't rally past the Falcons in the elimination contest.

Friends took a 4-0 lead after the second inning, but in the third the Coyotes scored twice. Viviana Alaniz (JR/Galena Park, Texas) walked and then scored on Josie Buhr (JR/Buffalo, N.D.)'s single. Alacala then singled to drive in Buhr to get the Coyotes on the board.

The Falcons scored five times in the bottom of the fourth inning to take a 9-2 lead.

Buhr led off the Coyote half of the fifth with a walk and then scored on Tiffani Alaniz (FR/Sebastian, Texas)' single. Sydnee Fordham (FR/Thornton, Colo.) drove in a run later in the inning that scored Mia Hernandez (SO/Hanford, Calif.) who singled in the inning.

Wesleyan tried to rally in the seventh as Hernandez led off the inning with a double and a walk to Tiffani Alaniz, but the Coyotes couldn't push a run across.

Hernandez had three of KWU's eight hits in the game.

Wesleyan finishes its season at 18-25 overall.
