CONCORDIA - A dominant performance in the heptathlon that led to a win by nearly 1,000 points has led to Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference Women's Field Athlete of the Week honors for Cloud County Community College women's track and field sophomore Vanessa Mercera.
Competing in the heptathlon at the Friends University Spring Invitational this past weekend, Mercera would win the event with 4,792 points after winning six of the seven events that make up the event. The next-closest competitor at the meet for Mercera would finish 993 points behind her total, with the 4,792 point score currently ranking first in the NJCAA Division I Outdoor Track performance list. Mercera would go on to run a split of 56 seconds as part of a first-place finish by the Thunderbird 4x400 meter relay team on Saturday with CCCC finishing with a time of 3:49.36 to finish as the only 4x400 meter relay team to run a sub-four-minute relay.
