Thief steals woman's identity, applies for unemployment benefits

A 56-year-old Salina woman recently received a letter from the Kansas Department of Labor concerning her applying for unemployment benefits.

Problem is, she is working and did not apply for unemployment benefits.

Salina Police Detective Sergeant David Villanueva said this morning that someone had used the woman's identity to apply for unemployment benefits.

He cautioned people to be particularly vigilant with their identity information. Villanueva also noted that unemployment benefits are taxable income, so while someone else is receiving the benefits by stealing someone's identity information, the identity theft victim also would get hit with needing to pay taxes on the income if the matter goes unreported.
