A Salina man with multiple warrants, along with one of his passengers were arrested Tuesday evening for evading police.

Salina Police Lieutenant David Villanueva told Salina Post this morning that the driver of the vehicle is also allegedly connected to a police chase that occurred earlier this month.

At approximately 7:29 p.m. Tuesday an officer noticed a blue Hyundai being operated with improper registration near Harbor Freight, 1808 S. 9th Street, in Salina. As the officer attempted to perform a traffic stop, the vehicle sped off.

The pursuit reached speeds of approximately 76 mph. Officers went east on Cloud Street, North on Roach Street where the suspect turned west on Russell Avenue. Then the pursuit went north on Norton Street where the vehicle turned west onto Claflin Avenue.

The vehicle made its final turn onto Quincy Avenue. The suspects abandoned the vehicle in the 1500 block of Quincy Street and ran. Salina Police officers continued their pursuit on foot.

Villanueva said officers found the driver of the vehicle, Daniel Burd, 23- 23-year-old of Salina hiding behind a shed in the 1500 Block of Osborne Ave.

The passenger, identified as Dane Welch, a 24-year-old of Salina ran into a house in the 1500 block of Osborne Street.

Welch had outstanding warrants from two district courts and one municipal court. Burd allegedly attempted to evade the authorities because of his outstanding warrants.  Welch was arrested for requested felony interference in addition to his existing warrants.

"We suspect that the person who ran into the house, [Welch] was actually staying there," Villanueva said. "We secured that residence and as we were running a search warrant, he was brought out of the residence by one of the residents of the house."

Villanueva said a second passenger, an unnamed 21-year-old female of Salina, was not charged.

"There was another pursuit that happened on the 15th of this month and we believe that he [Burd] was the one involved in that," Villanueva said.

Burd, was taken into custody with the following requested charges:

-Driving without a valid license
-Felony flee and elude
-Felony interference
-Reckless driving
-Numerous traffic infractions.

A suspect is still at large after leading Salina Police officers on a Tuesday morning pursuit.

Beginning at 4:57 a.m. on Tuesday, a Salina Police officer pulled behind a red 2007 Saturn two-door vehicle that was traveling in the 1200 block of W. Walnut Street.

"The vehicle fled at a very high rate of speed, prior to the officer attempting any stop of the vehicle," Salina Police Sergeant Tonniges said. "The officer activated his lights and siren, but the vehicle continued to flee eastbound on Walnut at a high rate of speed."

Tonniges said the vehicle ran through a stop sign at the intersection of College Avenue and Walnut Street.

During the pursuit, speeds reached 85 mph. The officer decided to terminate the pursuit due to safety concerns.

Tonniges said the vehicle was later found disabled and unoccupied on a lawn at the intersection of 10th and Walnut Street in Salina.

"It appeared the driver attempted to turn south onto 10th Street from Walnut, but was unable to make the turn due to its speed," Tonniges said.

Officers have a potential suspect and are following up.

Salina Post will update this story as more information becomes available.
