GLENDALE, Ariz. – Kansas Wesleyan baseball dropped both its games on Friday in the Coach Calderone Classic at Glendale High School. The Coyotes dropped their first game of the day to No. 24 Taylor (Ind.) 17-10, then fell to Arizona Christian 13-7.
Taylor jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning of the first game, but the Coyotes answered back in the top of the second with four runs. Jarrett Gable (SR/Colleyville, Texas), Cruz Oxford (FR/Peoria, Ariz.) and Kendall Foster (SR/Prosper, Texs) had RBI singles in the frame, and the other run in the inning came on a wild pitch.
Taylor got four back in the bottom of the inning and added five more in the third.Oxford homered in the fourth for the Coyotes.
KWU got two more in the sixth on Z
ack Beatty (JR/Maple Park, Ill.)'s RBI single, and a RBI double by Dustin Sipe (SR/Aztec, N.M.). KWU got a run in the seventh when Diego Fisher (SR/Hollister, Calif.) reached on an error allowing Kevin Esquilin-Cruz (SR/Trujilo Alto, Puerto Rico) to score, and the Coyotes added two more in the eighth on Haydn Brown (SR/Gardnerville, Nev.)'s RBI single and a sacrifice fly by Oxford.
Sipe led the Coyotes with three hits, while Oxford drove in three runs. Zach Westbrook (JR/Azle, Texas) took the loss for the Coyotes allowing nine runs, only five earned, on four hits.
Against Arizona Christian, the Coyotes gave up five in the bottom of the second inning to fall behind and didn't get on the board until the fourth when Brown drove in Foster on a sacrifice fly. The Coyotes added another in the fifth when Gable scored on an error.
Wesleyan got three on the board in the sixth on a Beatty homer, and Gable's 2-run double.
KWU also got single tallies in the seventh on a sacrifice fly by Sipe that scored William Dryburgh (SR/St. Joseph, Mo.), and in the ninth on a homer by Foster.
Foster, Esquilin-Cruz, and Gable had two hits each for the Coyotes. Luis Villanueva (JR/Willis, Texas) suffered the loss allowing seven runs on seven hits in three and a third innings.
The Coyotes will be back in action on Saturday, taking on Benedictine Mesa at 5 p.m., Arizona Time, 6 p.m. Central Time, at Gene Autry Ballpark. KWU concludes its Arizona trip on Sunday at Park Gilbert, a game that will be played at Tempe Diablo Stadium, the spring training home of the Los Angeles Angels.
