Kansans safely disposed of nearly four tons of unused and unwanted medicines during last month's National Drug Take-Back Day, and Saline County citizens did their part to add to that total.
According to Saline Counth Sheriff's Lieutenant Sean Kochanowski, 177 pounds of medications were collected in the county during the Oct. 23 event. Drop-off locations included the circle drive at Salina Regional Health Center and the Dillons at 1235 E. Cloud Street.
According to a federal Drug Enforcement Administration report, law enforcement personnel in Kansas collected 7,742 pounds of medications at 69 locations across the state on Oct. 23.
Kansans have safely destroyed nearly 230,000 pounds of medications during the 21 collection days that have occurred since 2010, according to information from the Kansas Attorney General's Office.

If you missed the drug take-back event, you can drop off unused medications in the dropbox located in the lobby of the sheriff's office, 251 N. 10th Street, between 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. There also is a collection box for needles/sharps.
On weekends, unused medications can be turned in anytime at the Saline County Jail visitation window. The jail entrance is located on the W. Elm Street/N. 12th Street side of the building.
