In 1927, the 3rd deadliest tornado in Texas history occurred when a violent F5, averaging nearly 1 mile wide, went on a 35-mile rampage through Rocksprings, located in extreme South Texas. The huge twister killed 74 and injured 205, or about one-third of the town's population at the time. An estimated $1.23 million in damage resulted as 235 of the 247 buildings were destroyed, many of which were leveled.

In 1959, a late-season snowstorm produced up to 10 inches in central Kansas in a swath from Russell to Cottonwood Falls.

In 1934, winds atop Mount Washington, New Hampshire averaged 186 mph for 5 minutes with a peak gust of 231 mph, the strongest gust on record for the U.S. At the time, the 231 mph gust had also been the highest wind speed ever recorded in the world until April 10th, 1996, when a 253 mph gust was measured at Barrow Island, Australia as Super Typhoon Olivia roared through the region.
