Doreen Ellen Couture, 87, passed away on Thursday, May 13, 2021 in her home in Abilene, Kansas, after a short illness.

She was born March 31, 1934, to Roy and Naomi Ekstrom Nordquist on a farm near Agenda, Kansas.

She graduated from Clyde High School in 1952, and then worked as a telephone operator in Beloit.

On August 20, 1954, she married her high school sweetheart, Joe Couture. They made their homes in Clay Center, Lindsborg and Abilene.

Doreen worked as a daycare provider when her daughters were young, then worked at Whetstone Oil Company in Lindsborg, at the First United Methodist Church in Abilene, for the Dodson dental office, and with USD #435 where she retired as clerk of the school board. After retiring she worked as a receptionist for the businesses in North Town Center.

Doreen was a member of many organizations in her lifetime including, most recently, Dickinson County Retired School Personnel and United Methodist Women.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Robert Nordquist and her husband Joe.

Survivors include daughters Cheri’ Couture of Lenexa and Kathy (Tim) Horan of Abilene, grandchildren Robin (Nathan) Weatherman of Gladstone, Missouri, and Ryan Horan of Abilene, great-grandchildren Hayden Weatherman of Columbia, Missouri, Landon Weatherman of Gladstone, Missouri, and Teigan and Gemma Horan of Abilene.

At Doreen’s request, a private family gathering of celebration will be held at the Tim Horan residence in Abilene.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be given to the Joe and Doreen Couture Scholarship. This scholarship is presented every year to an Abilene High School graduate who has attended at least one year of college and is awarded in August.
