Wind-whipped and chilled, the runners in Division 2 of the Ark Valley-Chisholm Trail League took the course in Newton on Saturday, with the varsity girls starting off the day’s competition. By the end of the races, three Salina Central Mustangs had earned All-League honors.
Runners who placed first through seventh in a varsity race took home First Team All-League recognition, while those who finished eighth through fourteenth qualified for Second Team All-League.
Cora White placed 12th for the Mustang girls with a time of 21:53. She was followed by Araceli Davila, who finished 23rd, in 22:43. Teammates Elle Denning and Liz Young dueled to the finish line, with Denning taking 28th and Young 29th, separated by only two seconds. Denning’s time was 23:33; Young’s was 23:35.
William Griffith continued to run very well for Central’s boys, placing third in 17:14 and earning First-Team recognition. Isaac French’s time of 17:51 placed him in ninth position and on the All-AVCTL Second Team. Rounding out the boys squad were Zack Tibbits, who placed 19th in 18:38; Cooper Affholder, 30th in 19:58; and Ryan Sheahon, 37th in 21:11. The Mustang boys placed fourth as a team.
Taylor Helton’s 21st place finish in 27:29 led the Mustang junior varsity girls. Angel Mendenhall ran 29:20 to place 28th, with Amelia Coykendall close behind at 30:37 and 32nd place. Alison Coykendall’s 33:32 placed 37th.
The junior varsity boys race finished the day. Two runners competed for Central. Nick Carano placed 48th with a time of 26:37, and Alex Riley finished in 50th position at 29:20.
While most of the junior varsity runners wrapped up their seasons with this meet, the varsity runners will move on to Regional competition in Great Bend on Saturday.
