WICHITA - Wichita State’s Kenny Pohto was named American Athletic Conference Freshman of the Week on Monday and teammate Tyson Etienne earned a spot on the league’s weekly honor roll.
Pohto – a 6-foot-10 forward from Stockholm, Sweden – becomes WSU’s first two-time freshman of the week winner since joining The American. Six others had won it previously, but none more than once.
Pohto stepped up with 12 points, nine rebounds and three blocks in the Shockers’ 102-66 win over Prairie View A&M last Wednesday.
Etienne scored a team-high 20 points in that game to go with five assists and four steals in 25 turnover-free minutes.
Wichita State (9-3) begins conference play Wednesday evening at East Carolina (9-3). The 6 p.m. CT tip airs on ESPN+.
The Shockers open the home portion of their conference schedule this Saturday against Memphis (11 a.m. CT, CBS).
