KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Fort Hays State was well-represented on the 2020-21 MIAA men's and women's academic awards lists released Thursday by the conference office.
The Tiger men had six players listed on the Academic Honor Roll, while the FHSU women had five players mentioned.
Cydney Bergmann, Whitney Randall and Jared Vitztum highlighted the awards listing by receiving both the MIAA Academic Excellence Award and the Scholar-Athlete Award. Just five individuals across the conference earned both prestigious awards.
Other players earning honor roll status from the men's team include Bjarni Jonsson, Jackson Miller, Gabe Pieschl, Devin Walker and Nyjee Wright. Individuals on the academic honor roll from the women's squad include Allison McFarren, Madison Mittie and Lauryn Reither.
Mittie has now been listed on the conference honor roll five times. Randall has now earned honor roll status four times in addition to four MIAA Academic Excellence Awards. Bergmann has earned both honor roll status and the MIAA Academic Excellence Award each of the last three years. It is the first Scholar-Athlete Award for both Randall and Bergmann. McFarren and Reither have now made an appearance on the conference honor roll in two consecutive seasons.
Vitztum earned his fifth academic honor roll recognition and his second Scholar-Athlete Award, while this is Wright's fourth appearance on the academic honor roll list. This is the second-straight honor for Jonsson, Miller, Pieschl and Walker.
An MIAA Academic Excellence Award recipient must have a grade point average used by the institution for purposes of NCAA academic certification of 4.00 or better at the certifying member institution. The honoree also must have at least two terms of attendance at the certifying member institution, excluding summer terms.
To qualify as a Scholar-Athlete an individual must have a grade point average used by the institution for purposes of NCAA academic certification of 3.50 at the certifying member institution. They must also have at least two terms of attendance at the certifying member institution, excluding summer terms. The student-athlete must also earn All-MIAA honors during the current season.
To be recognized on the Academic Honor Roll, one must have a grade point average used by the institution for purposes of NCAA academic certification of 3.00 at the certifying member institution. The individual must also have at least two terms of attendance at the certifying member institution, excluding summer terms. Transfers and true freshman are recognized at the conclusion of the school year, after they meet the two terms of attendance requirement.
