The Salvation Army corps building on North Santa Fe Avenue and the Thrift store on Fifth and Walnut Streets will both be closed until roof repairs are completed.

Salina Salvation Army Corps Director Lt. Luke Hursh said the initial estimate for roofing repairs on North Santa Fe Avenue is $100,000, while the estimate for the thrift store is close to $90,000.

Although covered by insurance, it is expected that any settlement will take time and will not be enough to cover the added expense of keeping programs running and addressing the damages.

On Friday evening, May 31, Salina was hit with a fast-moving severe weather system that generated torrential rain at a rate of 3 inches per hour. Coupled with hailstones that tore through structures several weeks ago, this has caused flooding and property damage.

In the case of the Salvation Army Salina corps building on North Santa Fe, and the Thrift store on fifth and Walnut which serves the community, hundreds of hail impacts made Swiss cheese of the roof, which allowed water in, damaging fixtures, clothing items and leaving behind soaked ceiling tiles and carpet.

Unfortunately, this extensive damage and subsequent repairs are jeopardizing critical feeding programs and services at the corps and operations of the Thrift store.

“Even though we have sustained significant damage at both locations, this will not deter us from fulfilling the mission of The Salvation Army in Salina,” said Lieutenant Luke Hursh, Salvation Army Salina Corps Director. “It may slow us down a bit, but we know we have a strong community that will step up and help us achieve even more than we can accomplish on our own.”

Although covered by insurance, it is expected that any settlement will take time and will not be enough to cover the added expense to keep programs running and addressing the damages.
