A Salina man was arrested Saturday evening after allegedly driving the wrong way on Broadway Boulevard and later attempting to escape custody while at the Salina Police Department.

According to SPD Captain James Feldman, officers responded around 5:30 p.m. on April 19 after a citizen reported a red Chrysler 300 traveling north in the southbound lanes near Broadway and Republic Avenue.

An officer located the vehicle in the parking lot of Arby’s, 510 S. Broadway Boulevard, where it appeared to have nearly struck the building. The driver, identified as 59-year-old Russell Carter of Salina, was determined to be under the influence and unable to operate the vehicle safely.

Carter was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence and transported to the Salina Police Department. While in a holding room, police say he broke an outlet cover and attempted to use it to free himself from a handcuff. Carter allegedly told officers he was trying to escape.

He was additionally charged with damage to property and attempted escape from custody.
