LINDSBORG - Kansas Wesleyan Softball pushed its KCAC record over .500 with a doubleheader sweep of the Bethany Swedes on Tuesday.
The Coyotes won the first game 10-2 in six innings, but needed an extra frame to get by the Swedes 10-4 in the second game.
The Coyotes got on the board in the first game in the second inning as MacKenzie Vela led off the inning with a single, then scored when Cadence Mallet reached on an error putting the Coyotes up 1-0.
Wesleyan added three in the third inning. Elli Han walked and stole second and after a walk to Keira Hammen, Han scored when Vela singled and all runners advanced a base on an error by the Swedes. Madison Geer then drove in a pair of runs with a double to make if 4-0.
Mallet led off the fourth inning with a homer to extend KWU's lead to 5-0.
Bethany got on the board in the bottom of the fourth with a pair of runs.
The Coyotes added another run in the fifth as Mallet doubled, bringing home Maya Nunn who was pinch running for Hammen who led off the inning with a walk.
The Coyotes pushed the game to run-rule territory in the sixth. Brooklyn Lange walked, Han and Kendell Wilcox both reached on errors. Hammen followed with a single that brought in a run, Vela then drove in a run with a single. Brooklyn Smith walked to load the bases and Mallet followed with a RBI single to make it 10-2.
Alli Mickelsen got the win in the circle allowing two runs, one earned on three hits over four innings. Bella Allen closed out the game pitching two innings, holding Bethany to one hit. Vela and Mallet had three hits each to lead the Coyotes.
In the second game the Coyotes broke a scoreless tie with four runs in the third inning. Addie Herrera led off the inning with a walk but pinch runner Nunn would get out on a fielder's choice by Lange. Han followed with a RBI double and Wilcox brought in another run with a bunt single. Hammen followed with a double and then scored, along with Wilcox on a Bethany error.
Bethany scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, ending KWU pitcher Addie Herrera's scoreless inning streak at 29.
The Coyotes took a 4-3 lead into the bottom of the seventh, but Bethany would tie it up and force extra innings.
The Coyotes took the lead thanks to a triple by Smith that scored Vela, who was the tiebreaker runner on second base. Mallet followed with a sacrifice fly for a run and the Coyotes would load the bases for Han to double in two more runs. After Wilcox walked, Hammen doubled home two more runs to give the Coyotes a 10-4 lead.
Bethany couldn't push a run across in the bottom of the eighth solidifying the sweep for the Coyotes.
Herrera got the win for the Coyotes as the pitcher of record when KWU took the lead in the eighth. She allowed four runs, three earned on 11 hits while striking out four. Allen closed out the game in the eighth with one strikeout.
