Cloud County men post second place team finish in Newton

NEWTON – Three top-10 finishers would help lead the Cloud County men's cross country team to a second-place team finish at the 2020 Tabor College Cottonwood Challenge held at Harvey County East Park in Newton, Kansas on Saturday.

With a total of 62 team points, Cloud County would trail only Newman University who won the seven-team event with 34 total points while Friends University would round out the top three with a third-place finish (76 points). Tabor College would take fourth with 98 points while Bethany College (137 points), Southwestern College (142 points), and Kansas Wesleyan (169 points) also posted team scores.

The T-Birds would have the top-two collegiate finishers in the 8K race as Habtamu Geta would take second with a time of 25:02.85 and trail only CCCC alumnus Kwanele Mthembu who won the race as an unattached athlete (24:51.77). Also running unattached would be Cloud County runner Awet Beraki to take a third-place finish (25:40.56) while Michael Iyali came in fourth with a time of 26:47.23. Rylan Cheney would earn a top-10 finish with a time of 28:27.85 to take ninth while Ryder Amos also competed for Cloud County and posted a time of 33:49.41.

What's next?

A week off followed by a return trip to Newton is next in store for Cloud County as CCCC will compete on Oct. 9 in the Bethel College Invitational. The meet will serve as the regular-season finale for the T-Birds, with the 2020 NJCAA Region VI Championships to follow three weeks later.
