Family members of elementary students enrolled in Salina Public Schools received an email notifying them of a change in the length of the school day.
"In order to meet the required 1,116 instructional minutes required by the state, we need to extend the elementary school day by 20 minutes," the email read. "This change is needed because of the way recess minutes are counted."
According to USD 305, beginning Monday, April 15, the new school day will start at 8:15 a.m. and dismiss at 3:30 p.m.
"We understand that changes to the school day impact families," the email continued. "We want to assure you that we've carefully considered all factors before making this decision."
Salina Post will update this as more information becomes available.
