Tiger women's cross country places fifth in Denver

DENVER - The Fort Hays State women's cross country team placed fifth at the Roadrunner Invitational on Friday at Washington Park.

The Tigers finished one spot higher than UC-Colorado Springs, the ninth-ranked team in the country.

Fort Hays State picked up 143 points in the team standings, 16 more than UCCS and 43 clear of Division I Wyoming.

Running the first six-kilometer race of the season, Abigail Stewart placed 18th with a time of 23:01.7. Brooke Navarro traversed the course in 23:34.6, good for 29th. Emily Salmans placed 37th with a time of 24:06.8, while Jaycee Vath crossed the line in 24:34.8 to place 48th. Darian Hudgeons was the fifth Tiger across the line, placing 52nd with a time of 24:53.7.

Colorado School of Mines, the No. 2-ranked team in the country, took the team title with 27 points after placing five runners in the top nine. Megan Mooney from DI Colorado State took the individual crown with a time of 21:21.9.

The Tigers are scheduled to run again next Friday (Sept. 24) when they head to Emporia State for the ESU Invitational beginning at 5 p.m.
