BALDWIN CITY - Kansas Wesleyan Women's Volleyball dropped a four-set match to the upstart Baker Wildcats 25-17, 23-25, 17-25, 14-25 on Friday night in the Park / Baker Labor Day Classic.
The Coyotes rallied from a 5-1 deficit in the first set taking a 12-11 lead on a kill by Ryan Pennington. The Coyotes pushed out to a 15-12 lead and led 21-17 when the Coyotes rolled off the final four points of the set.
Every time Baker pushed the Coyotes in the second set, KWU had an answer back. Baker tied the set at 5-5 only to see the Coyotes score the next three. KWU pushed its lead out to 17-12 before Baker scored four straight to get within a point. The Coyotes led 19-16 when Baker scored the next three to take a 20-19 lead. The Coyotes got a kill by Ivi Marcolino to tie it at 20, but Baker was able to win the set 25-23.
Baker pushed out to a 7-2 lead in the third set and extended the difference to 15-5. Baker extended its lead to 23-12 before the Coyotes got within seven ahead of Baker taking the set.
The fourth set was tied 7-7 when Baker scored five straight to take a 12-7 lead. The Coyotes couldn't recover and dropped the set and match.
Marcolino led the Coyotes with 16 kills while Ryan Pennington had 12. Blair Pennington had 37 assists. Tristyn Hedman led the Coyotes with 15 digs. Avery Conner had four blocks.
