Teen safety while driving is the focus of a campaign the Saline County Sheriff's Office will launch near schools in the county next week.

Beginning Monday and running through March 5, the Saline County Sheriff's Office will join other law enforcement agencies in Kansas, Missouri, and Oklahoma in increasing enforcement near high schools to raise awareness of roadway safety, according to information from the sheriff's office.

Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for those 15-18 years of age in the United States.

"Even one teen death is unacceptable," Sheriff Roger Soldan said. "Please slow down, put the phone away or turn it off, and always buckle up."

According to the sheriff's office, deputies will issue citations to any individual who refuses to obey the traffic laws, whether it is for speeding, texting, or failing to buckle up.

The sheriff's office asks that teens be reminded that driving is a privilege and be encouraged to learn about the importance of driving safely.
