WICHITA – The Kansas Wesleyan women's soccer team knew it would be no easy task taking on the tenth-ranked Oklahoma Wesleyan Eagles in the KCAC Tournament semifinals inside the Stryker Sports Complex indoor facility on Wednesday.
The Coyotes would give the Eagles everything they could, coming up short in a 4-3 decision.
KWU rallied from a 2 goal deficit in the first half. OKWU netted foals in the eighth and 22nd minutes to take a 2-0 lead, but the Coyotes would not be denied.
Viviana Ramiriez's goal from 30 yards out in the 24th minute got the Coyote offense started and in the 41st minute Destiny Shaughnessy (FR/Redlands, Calif.) netted the first of her two goals off a delivery from Yarellie Galindo (SR/Lynwood, Calif.) to tie the match at 2-2.
Oklahoma Wesleyan got a bit of momentum heading into the half as the Eagles scored with 20 seconds to go before intermission.
The Eagles extended their lead to 4-2 in the 62nd minute, but the determined Coyotes weren't ready to give up just yet.
KWU built up an attack and it was Shaughnessy again this time on a helper by Precious Nwosu (FR/Goleta, Calif.) in the 83rd minute that got the Coyotes within a goal at 4-3.
Unfortunately, the Coyotes could not find a second equalizer before the Eagles would run out the clock.
OKWU outshot KWU 17-7 in the match. Kayla Deaver (SR/Lee's Summit, Mo.) and Shaughnessy had two each.
KWU's season comes to a close at 11-8-2 after a 17th consecutive appearance in the KCAC semifinals.
