Chiefs Head Coach Andy Reid Quotes

January 11, 2024

OPENING STATEMENT: “The guys that won’t go, Wanya Morris will be listed as out, everybody else has a chance. We’re taking the two receivers (Justyn Ross and Kadarius Toney) day-to-day that we talked about, so we’ll see how they go. (We) look forward to the challenge of playing the Dolphins again, should be a great environment up at the stadium here. I know our fans will be fired up and ready to go. With that, time’s yours.”

Q: Will Donovan Smith be ready to go?

REID: “Yeah.”

Q: Will he start?

REID: “Probably.”

Q: When you say two receivers, do you mean Rashee Rice and Kadarius Toney?

REID: “No, Justyn Ross and (Kadarius) Toney.”

Q: If Kadarius Toney plays, what do you expect from him?

REID: “It’d be limited, limited role.”

Q: Do you think resting Travis Kelce last game will help him and his body this week?

REID: “I think the time off, yeah, helped the guys that had the time off, him being one of them. He’s had a lot of snaps in his time, so any time off like that definitely helps.”

Q: Thoughts on Bill Belichick and Pete Carroll as coaches.

REID: “Those are two great coaches. You know, I mentioned after our game that Bill (Belichick) is the best I’ve ever gone against. I don’t know if they’re done coaching or not, but I know they’re done at those particular spots. Great coaches, phenomenal coaches.”

Q: Bill Belichick spent a long time doing the personnel as well.

REID: “That’s a tough thing to do for that long. He did it well though.”

Q: Bill Belichick and Nick Saban revolutionized defense in college and in the NFL. Is that something you’ve looked at?

REID: “Pete (Carroll) in that too with the whole, ‘Seattle three’ they had going. Those guys were tough to compete against because of that. They are great adjusters for you – what you’re throwing at them on one side they’re throwing some stuff back at you. They did a nice job adjusting.”

Q: Can you do anything to prepare for the cold?

REID: “No, cold’s cold, for you, me, it’s cold. Cold is cold, but you go do your thing, that’s how you go play.”

Q: Do you just tell them to play then stand by the warmer on the sideline?

REID: “There’s one thing you don’t have to do and that’s tell them to stand by the warmer (laughter).”

Q: Do you intend to still be the Head Coach here next season?

REID: “I haven’t even thought about that. I’m thinking about one thing – I figured that would come up when you guys were asking these questions – because I’m old, but not that old.”

Q: I talked to a guy who took ‘Introduction to football’ at the University of Missouri, a class you and other assistants taught down there. Do you remember teaching that class?

REID: “I do, a lot of fun, it was a fun class to be able to be a part of. I do remember it.”

TE TRAVIS KELCE

Q: How do you balance team legacy vs. personal legacy?

KELCE: “I think, without a doubt, I’m thinking more Super Bowls when I talk legacy. Having that desire to be a certain type of teammate day in and day out. Channeling that right mindset for sure.”

Q: What can you take from the game against Miami in Germany? How different are the teams now?

KELCE: “First thing is they have a really good secondary. I think they’re one of the best secondaries in the league. That being said, (Dolphins Defensive Coordinator) Vic Fangio has them playing very good as a collective unit. They fly around, they play physical football. With that being said, we have to be able to control the line of scrimmage and make third downs a lot easier with good plays and good movement on first and second (down).”

Q: How do you handle teams making you a focal point of their defensive plan?

KELCE: “There are still ways to impact that game. In the run game being able to be a good blocker and in the pass game running my route accordingly to get other guys open if it’s possible. Getting a lot of attention, you can free up a lot of guys. I think that’s the biggest thing, still finding ways to help out the team even if they are ‘Taking you away.’ I love the challenge.”

Q: What’s the key to locking in during the playoffs?

KELCE: “At this point in the year, you just know you have a special team. You’ve gone through the ups and downs of the season; you find yourself sitting in the playoffs and anything can happen in the dance.”
