KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The Fort Hays State women's soccer team placed 16 student-athletes on the MIAA Academic Honor Roll, announced Friday by the league office.
Nearly half of those players earned special honors, including three Scholar-Athlete Award winners and four recipients of the MIAA Academic Excellence Award.
Emily Hutchings, Reilly Madden and Deonna Wellbrock all received the Scholar-Athlete Award after being named All-MIAA perfomers on the pitch last week. Hutchings earned second team All-MIAA honors after leading the team with five assists and adding two goals. Madden picked up third team All-MIAA honors after anchoring the Tiger defense, playing all but 47 minutes through the 19-match season (team-high 1,740 minutes). She helped the Tigers allow less than one goal per match (0.95). Wellbrock was also a third team selection after ranking first in save percentage (.835), first in total shutouts (seven), second in the league in goals against average (.917) and fifth in total saves (86).
Recipients of the MIAA Academic Excellence Award include Tessa Irvine, Maja Persa, Emily Reitz and Isabelle Robben. It is the fourth-such award for Persa, the third for Irvine and Reitz and the second for Robben.
Also listed on the Academic Honor Roll were Macy Decker, Katie Evans, Skylar Forrest, Jersey Garoutte, Taylor Harr, Jadyn Newell, Cailey Perkins, Zariah Smith and Jordan Thompson.
An MIAA Academic Excellence Award recipient must have a grade point average used by the institution for purposes of NCAA academic certification of 4.00 or better at the certifying member institution. The honoree also must have at least two terms of attendance at the certifying member institution, excluding summer terms.
To qualify as a Scholar-Athlete an individual must have a grade point average used by the institution for purposes of NCAA academic certification of 3.50 at the certifying member institution. They must also have at least two terms of attendance at the certifying member institution, excluding summer terms. The student-athlete must also earn All-MIAA honors during the current season.
To be recognized on the Academic Honor Roll, one must have a grade point average used by the institution for purposes of NCAA academic certification of 3.00 at the certifying member institution. The individual must also have at least two terms of attendance at the certifying member institution, excluding summer terms.
First-year student-athletes, including transfers and true freshmen, will be recognized at the conclusion of the school year when they meet the two terms of attendance requirement.
