James Robert Herter, 85, of McPherson, Kansas, passed away, at 11:57 p.m., Thursday, December 23rd, 2021, at Pine Village, Moundridge.
James was born in Great Bend, Kansas on May 21, 1936, son of Mildred L. (Sinnott) and Louis J. Herter.
James attended St. Joseph's Catholic grade school in Ellinwood, Kansas and graduated from Ellinwood High School, Ellinwood, Kansas.
He was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in McPherson, where he was a member of the Knights of Columbus.
James worked as a Repair Mechanic for the National Cooperative Refinery Association, McPherson, Kansas for over 38 years and when he retired, he was a Compressor Repair Mechanic.
James enjoyed golfing with his friends and was very good with his hands and loved spending time woodworking.
James Robert Herter was united in marriage to Patricia Jeanette Kirmer on June 8, 1957, at St. Joseph's Church Ellinwood, Kansas. The young couple established their first home together in Ellinwood, Kansas. This union was blessed with the birth of three children, two sons and one daughter, Robert, Janet, and Ronald. The family moved to McPherson in 1970.
He is survived by his wife, Patricia "Pat" Herter, of McPherson, Kansas; his children, Robert Herter and his wife Carol, of Wichita, Kansas, Janet Adkins and her husband Michael, of McPherson, Kansas and Ronald Herter and his wife Carol, of Wichita, Kansas; his siblings, Jerry Herter, of Pocatello, Idaho, Howard Herter, of Ellinwood, Kansas, Barbara Herter, of Wichita, Kansas, Richard Herter, of Belaire, Kansas and Helen Nickelson, of Redmond, Washington.
He is also survived by 9 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren.
James was preceded in death by his parents, Louis and Mildred Herter and a brother, John Herter.
Visitation will be on Wednesday, December 29, 2021, from 9:15 a.m. to 10:15 a.m. at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, McPherson, Kansas.
Rosary is Wednesday, December 29, 2021, at 10:30 a.m. at the church.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, December 29, 2021, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in McPherson, Kansas with Fr. Ben Shockey officiating.
Burial will be at the McPherson Cemetery, McPherson, Kansas.
