It’s been an up and down 2021-22 season for the Salina South boys basketball team, who will enter the final five games of their regular season at 6-9.
The Cougars have had a lot of questions to answer this season after losing almost all of their scoring from a season ago, but began the year well with a dominant 57-35 win over the cross-town rival Central Mustangs.
South then faced a gauntlet of tough 5A teams, dropping five in a row but rebounded well winning five of their next six before dropping their three most recent contests to Central, Maize South, and Hutch.
Through it all, the Cougars have been led on and off the court by their key returner from last season in junior Tejon McDaniel, who has led the team with just shy of 17 points per game to go along with a team-leading 6.3 rebounds.
Beyond McDaniel, South has been helped by a trio of seniors who had been waiting in the wings, as guys like Devin Myers, Edgar Garcia, and Zach Davidson have finally gotten their moment in the spotlight.
The Cougar offense has put up nearly 50 points per game this season but has been let down on defense from time to time, allowing 50 or more in 8 of their 15 contests so far.
The final five opponents for South will look like this
2/11: 8-7 Derby
2/15: 7-8 Haysville Campus
2/18: 1-14 Newton
2/22: 11-4 Maize
2/24: 2-13 Goddard
