KWU flag football falls to Ottawa, 28-20

OTTAWA – Kansas Wesleyan flag football came up just short against the Ottawa University Braves on Saturday at AdventHealth Field.

The Coyotes saw Ottawa score twice in the fourth quarter to come back for the 28-20 score.

Wesleyan held Ottawa out of the end zone on the first drive of the game and answered back with a touchdown drive, aided by Brianna Hernandez-Silva (SR/Las Vegas, Nev.)'s 34 yard run and then Ciaran DeCuir (SO/Las Vegas, Nev.)'s 2-yard touchdown run and the PAT giving KWU a 7-0 lead with 5:51 left in the first.

The Coyotes scored again on their next drive, taking over with 3:22 to go in the first, and converting a fourth down play from the Ottawa 5 on a run by Hernandez-Silva to take a 14-0 lead.

Ottawa got on the board with 1:55 left in the second, and the Coyotes scored again on their next drive as Hernandez-Silva found DeCuir for a 2-yard touchdown making it 20-7 with 44 seconds left in the half.

Ottawa would score with seven seconds left in the half to get within a 20-14 score at the half.

The Braves took the lead as time expired in the third quarter, and the Coyotes drove to the Ottawa 18 where their drive stalled. Ottawa would then answer with a scoring drive to make it 28-20.

KWU had 315 yards of total offense in the game, while Ottawa had 347 yards. Hernandez-Silva was 23 of 36 passing for 230 yards and a touchdown. She added 13 rushes for 83 yards and another score. DeCuir and Angel Roman (SO/Jacksonville, Fla.) led the Coyotes with nine catches each. DeCuir for 106 yards and Roman for 65 yards.

Lexi Marquez (SO/Las Vegas, Nev.) led the Coyotes with 12 flag pulls, while Shanya Murape (FR/Toronto, Ontario) had eight, including three sacks.

Wesleyan returns home on Wednesday, hosting Midland at 6 p.m. at JRI Stadium at the Graves Family Sports Complex.
