NWS: High wind warning, wind advisories for our area

It is a blustery day across Kansas. With that comes a high wind warning and wind advisories.

High wind warning

The National Weather Service in Wichita has issued a high wind warning in effect from noon to 9 p.m. Tuesday for the following counties in our area.

Ellsworth County

Lincoln County

South winds at 35 to 45 mph with gusts up to 70 mph are expected.

Blowing dust is likely in the warned area. Visibilities are likely to fall below 2 miles at times. Use caution on road ways.

Damaging winds will blow down trees and power lines. Widespread power outages are expected. Travel will be difficult, especially for high profile vehicles. People should avoid being outside in forested areas and around trees and branches. If possible, remain in the lower levels of your home during the windstorm, and avoid windows.

Wind advisories

The National Weather Service in Wichita has issued a wind advisory in effect from noon to 9 p.m. Tuesday for the following counties in our area.

Marion County

McPherson County

Saline County

South winds at 25 to 35 mph with gusts up to 55 mph are expected.

Gusty winds could blow around unsecured objects. Tree limbs could be blown down and a few power outages may result. Use extra caution when driving, especially if operating a high-profile vehicle.

The National Weather Service in Topeka has issued a wind advisory in effect from noon Tuesday to 1 a.m. Wednesday for the following counties in our area.

Clay County

Cloud County

Dickinson County

Ottawa County

Republic County

South winds sustained from 25 to 35 mph with gusts up to approximately 50 mph can be expected.

Gusty winds could blow around unsecured objects. Tree limbs could be blown down and a few power outages may result. Use extra caution when driving, especially if operating a high-profile vehicle.

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment recommends that you take preventative measures during this blowing dust event, such as staying indoors or wearing protective breathing masks if outside. High dust concentrations can cause respiratory problems, decrease lung activity, aggravate asthma, and lead to potential heart-related problems, especially with children, elderly, or those with pre-existing respiratory conditions.
