Agenda items
Commissioners are scheduled to consider a request from senior services to award a bid for the construction of a Meals On Wheels Drive-Through at the south door of the senior center. Senior services is requesting that commissioners approve the low bid from Lancaster Construction for $107,948.40 for the project.
"The Meals On Wheels drive-through will eliminate congestion in the parking lot. Currently volunteers attempt to find a parking spot or park behind parked cars so they can quickly pickup their meals to deliver. This is causing a problem with other cars leaving or trying to get through the parking lot. A new drive-through that allows volunteers to pick-up meals at the South door will help with loading heavy bags, eliminate the congestion in the parking lot and allow freight trucks easy access to the building," Rosie Walter, senior services director, noted in her request to commissioners.
Additionally, Walters is asking that a lone bid received concerning repairs to the department's storage building be rejected "to allow additional time to review specifications and look at alternatives."
The building, on the west side of the senior center property at 245 N. Ninth Street, is the old boiler building from when the senior center was the Saline County Courthouse.
"The basement houses the old boilers that historically heated the building. The boilers have asbestos crumbling off them and will require abatement. The storage building has been declared unsafe by Johnnie Adam, Architect. The floor has dropped in several areas due to the leaky roof and the stairs are no longer usable. A rental storage pod is currently housing our lawn equipment and medical equipment we loan out to those in need. The recycling is now sitting behind the trash dumpster," Walter noted in her request to commissioners.
Ponton Construction submitted the lone bid to repair the building, but the $157,354 price tag was "well above" budget estimates and costs projected by the architect, according to information in the commission meeting packet.
Other items on the county agenda for Tuesday include the following.
●Consider multiple employee policy changes
●Consider appointing Kenton Dreiling to an unexpired term on the Rural Fire District No. 5 Board of Trustees.
●Consider appointing Shannon Anaya to an unexpired term on the Senior Services Advisory Council.

●Consider additional programs for American Rescue Plan Act funding.
●Review information for establishing the cost for maintenance of Kansas Department of Corrections inmates.
