The Southeast of Saline girl’s basketball team got some good old-fashioned revenge on Friday night, handing Minneapolis a loss on their own home floor by a final score of 55-49.
This win moves the Lady Trojans to 15-2 and 7-1 in league play where they now hold sole possession of first place, pushing the Lady Lions to second at 6-2.
With just one more league win Southeast can claim at least a share of yet another league title, while two wins or a win and a Minneapolis loss would give the crown to the Lady Trojans outright.
This hard-fought road victory wouldn’t have been possible without a 34-point outburst by Reagan Goetz, who put on an absolute show in a career-high night.
“We knew that they were going to be out for blood and this was about revenge for us,” Goetz said. “We were going to be coming for each other and this was going to be a 32-minute battle to the buzzer. We knew we had to focus on rebounding and fighting through all the contact and holding.”
Goetz got the Lady Trojans rolling with an 11-point first quarter and after hitting just one three in the second, exploded down the stretch adding 13 in the third and seven in the fourth.
“We started out with some momentum and it continued to flow through the rest of the game,” she said. “It all goes back to my teammates, Minneapolis started face-guarding me a little more but my teammates started driving and kicking and us attacking the rim opened things us for us.”
Two Lady Lions were able to notch double digits but their efforts were in vain as Goetz’s performance proved too much to overcome and the Lady Trojans walked out of town with a 55-49 victory.
With just three games remaining in the regular season, Southeast will play a back-to-back to open week ten, hosting Ellinwood on Monday before traveling to Ellsworth on Tuesday.
