A sometimes high-speed pursuit through a west Salina neighborhood early this morning resulted in an overheated pickup, but no suspect.

An officer on patrol at approximately 12:40 a.m. Friday noticed a white pickup turn from Cherokee Drive onto Seneca Avenue without using a turn signal. When the officer attempted to stop the pickup, it accelerated and fled, according to Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester. A chase ensued throughout the neighborhood, with speeds reaching 70 mph.

Forrester said the officer lost sight of the pickup as it entered Redwood Drive.

At 12:50 a.m. Friday, a witness in the 800 block of Seneca Avenue flagged down the officer and pointed out a white GMC Sierra pickup that was overheating in front of 900 Seneca Avenue, Forrester said. The driver was no where to be found.

Police attempted to contact the registered owner of the pickup, who lives in the 800 block of Willow Drive, but have not yet been successful in doing so, Forrester said.

On the way to the registered owner's residence, police found in the roadway in front of the residence a .40 caliber Smith and Wesson handgun that appeared to have broken apart upon impact with the street.

Forrester said police are continuing to look for the driver and for the owner of the pickup.
