Kansas Wesleyan softball dropped both ends of a doubleheader with the Avila Eagles on Saturday at Salina South High School. Avila won the first game 7-2, and the second 1-0.
The second game was a thriller as Avila took the 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning, and held off several challenges by the Coyotes.
The Coyotes got a leadoff bunt single in the bottom of the first and Jocelyn Alcala (JR/Fullerton, Calif.) followed with a fielder's choice and stole second. Tiffani Alaniz (FR/Sebastian, Texas) then reached on a fielder's choice and the Coyotes were unable to get a run across.
In the sixth, Wesleyan got a pair of runners on as Sydnee Fordham (FR/Thornton, Colo.) singled and Buhr walked. Alcala moved the runners up with a sacrifice bunt, but the Coyotes could not push a run across.
Buhr, Alaniz and Fordham had hits for the Coyotes.
In the opener, both teams scored in the first inning, Avila taking advantage of a KWU error to push a run over. The Coyotes used a leadoff single by Buhr, a double by Alcala and a RBI ground out by Mia Hernandez (SO/Hanford, Calif.) to get on the board.
Avila took the lead in the fifth, scoring six runs.
Wesleyan tried to rally in the seventh, getting singles by Bailey Rivas (SR/La Puente, Calif.) and Anahi Agredano (JR/Anaheim, Calif.) to lead off the inning, and Fordham drove in a run with a hit, but the Coyotes couldn't push any more runs across.
Buhr and Fordham had two hits each in the game for the Coyotes as KWU outhit Avila 8-7 in the contest.
KWU is on the road for both games next week, at Tabor on Tuesday and at York next Saturday.
