🏀 Men's Basketball faces solid Sterling squad on Wednesday

The Coyotes are back in action after the Thanksgiving break with a Kansas Conference road game against Sterling.

THE SERIES

The Coyotes lost twice to Sterling last season but had won 15 of the previous 17. The Warriors won two close games last season, 76-72 in Salina and 69-66 in Sterling. KWU has a 23-17 lead in the series since 2005.

KANSAS WESLEYAN AT A GLANCE

The Coyotes upended McPherson 75-73 on Nov. 19 in McPherson then lost to 10th-ranked Oklahoma Wesleyan 77-64 on Nov. 22 in Bartlesville, Okla., in their two conference games before the holiday break. They are 3-2 in their last five games. KWU played an exhibition with Northwestern Oklahoma State last Monday, nearly defeatiing the Rangers 80-78.
  2. Caiden Punt is the top scorer with a 19.1 average. He also leads the team in rebounding at 9.0. Next on the scoring list in double figures are Wyatt Powell (14.3), Gabriel Phillips (12.8) and Brandon Avedon (11.3). Avedon also leads the team in assists at 4.4 per game.
  3. The Coyotes are averaging just over 75 points and are allowing just over 80. Collectively they're shooting 44 percent from the field that includes 24 percent from long range and 77 percent from the foul line. They're outrebounding the opposition by just over five per game are committing 13 turnovers compared to their opponents 11.

STERLING AT A GLANCE

  1. The Warriors have won their last five games. They defeated Bethany 80-78, Avila 89-76 and non-conference opponent Barclay 96-55 in their final three games before Thanksgiving. They won 90-85 at Hesston in a non-conference game on Saturday.
  2. Forward Julian Smith leads the team in scoring (17.8) and rebounding (6.9). Guard Ziri Blackwood is second in scoring (14.5) and has made a team-best 23 3-pointers; Smith has made 17.
  3. Sterling is scoring 84 points per game while allowing 75. The Warriors are shooting 45 percent from the field including 39 percent from beyond the 3-point arc and are making 78 percent of their free throws. They outrebound their opponents by 4.4 per contest and are committing 12 turnovers per outing.
