NEWTON – Kansas Wesleyan women's cross country finished third at Saturday's Tabor Cottonwood Challenge at Harvey County East Lake.

The Coyotes were paced by junior Stephanie Martinez (JR/Horizon City, Texas), who placed fourth in the race, covering the 5K course in 20:15.64.

Tabetha Deines (JR/Salina, Kan.) finished ninth for the Coyotes in 20:43.81, Christina Tripp (FR/Dayton, Idaho) was 16th in 21:36.04, Jadin Bezdicek (SR/Jackson, Minn.) was 34th with a time of 23:42, Regan Rhodes (SO/Mullinville, Kan.) was 35th in 23:44.70, Cindy Sheaffer (SO/Oberlin, Kan.) was 42nd in 24:37.25, and Makayla Johnson (FR/Salina, Kan.) was 45th in 26:11.24.

Wesleyan was third in the final team standings, sharing a 94-point score with Friends, but KWU carried a better total accumulated time and a better average time in the race.

NJCAA member Cloud County CC won the meet with 29 points, followed by host Tabor with 73. NCAA Division II Newman was fifth with 97 points, Southwestern was sixth with 142 and Bethany was seventh with 182.

Wesleyan will remain idle in competition until the NAIA MidStates Classic on Oct. 24 in Winfield, due to the cancellation of the Fort Hays State Tiger Open, which had been scheduled for Oct. 10. The KWU coaching staff is still looking for a meet to fill the void left by the cancellation.
