WINFIELD – Kansas Wesleyan used a five-run ninth inning to complete a sweep of the Southwestern Moundbuilders with a 10-1 win in the series finale on Monday at Broadway Recreation Complex.
Seven of Wesleyan's 10 runs game on two swings of the bat.
Haydn Brown (SR/Gardnerville, Nev.) hit a 3-run homer in the top of the third inning, and freshman Robbie Keener (FR/Abilene, Kan.) connected for a grand slam as part of KWU's 5-run ninth inning.
KWU only needed five hits to score the 10 runs, taking advantage of five Southwestern errors.
Jarrett Gable (JR/Colleyville, Texas) reached on an error to open up the KWU half of the third, and three batters later William Dryburgh (SR/St. Joseph, Mo.) walked, followed by Brown's 3-run shot to center.
The Coyotes added two more in the seventh when Dryburgh reached on a bunt single that scored Justin Lewis (JR/Redmond, Wash.) and Jalen Jones (SO/Katy, Texas) would score on the play as well thanks to a Southwestern error.
Dryburgh drove in the other run of the ninth inning, reaching on an error on a bunt that allowed Gable to score after he reached on another error to open the inning. Brown was hit by a pitch to load the bases, setting up Keener's grand slam.
Wesleyan's first three hitters – Dryburgh, Brown and Keener – combined to drive in nine of KWU's 10 runs.
Jansen Lublin (JR/San Diego, Calif.) was phenomenal on the mound for the Coyotes, going eight innings, allowing one run on five hits while striking out nine, and walking none. KT Gearlds (JR/Ingram, Texas) pitched the ninth, striking out two around a walk.
Wesleyan will play its fourth game in three days on Tuesday, hosting York at 3 p.m. at Dean Evans Stadium. The game was originally scheduled for last Tuesday, but inclement weather forced its postponement.
