Mabel Marie Oyer

Mabel Oyer, age 97, passed from this Earth on February 7, 2024, in Newton, Kansas and is now in Heaven with her Lord and Savior. Mabel’s life began on November 3, 1926, in Dodge City, KS. She was the daughter of John J. and Iva (Williams) Houser. Mabel is a graduate of Dodge City High School in 1945. She was united in marriage to Rev. Lawrence “Larry” Oyer on August 21, 1949 in Dodge City, Kansas. Mabel and Lawrence were married 72 years prior to his death in 2022. The couple raised three daughters Marilyn Beth, Monta Jo, and Marta Kay. Mabel supported her husband in his Christian pastoral ministry and led in children’s and women’s ministry.
Mabel worked for Woolworth Co. in Dodge City, Montgomery Ward in Newton, and later J C Penney Co. in Wichita until her retirement in 1988. Mabel loved flower gardening, collecting dolls, windmills, and piggy banks. She enjoyed spending time with family and friends and traveling.
Mabel’s loving family includes her daughters M. Kay Pearson of Newton, M. Jo (Michael) Templin of Wichita, son-in-law Jim Mathews of Nixa, MO.; grandsons Ben Hawk, Isaac Pearson, and Kenny Scarpelli, all of Wichita, and Dane (Bethany) Templin of Lakewood, CO; great grandchildren Kaitlyn Scarpelli, Hartley Hagen, and Everett Templin.
She is preceded in death by her parents, husband Lawrence, daughter Marilyn Mathews, son-in-law Steve Pearson, brothers Charles, Guy, Zimri, Clay, William Henry and Ted Houser, and sisters Madeline Fleming, Juanita Houser, and Elizabeth Wingert.
Her family will gather with friends on Friday, February 16, 2024 from 5-6:30 p.m. at Lamb Funeral Home in Whitewater, Kansas where her memorial service will be held at 6:30 p.m. She will be laid to rest on Saturday February 17, 2024 at 12 p.m. at the Maple Grove Cemetery in Dodge City, Kansas.
