On a chilly Oct. 15 afternoon, the Salina Central Mustangs protected their home pitch against the Buhler Crusaders with a nail-biting 1-0 win.

This was the final home game of the 2020 season for the Mustangs.

Neither team was able to reach the net in the first half. Buhler’s best chance came on a long pass that was deflected by Mustang goalie Grant Sheppard. Central was also unable to make the most of a pair of long passes that posed brief threats to the Crusaders’ goal.

In the second half, both teams played a game of possession, with discipline and communication as their focus. Abram Jennings managed a pair of shots, as did Avery Regier, but the game remained knotted at 0-0. Finally, Ricky Picasso took the ball into the middle. While battling for position, he managed to outlet the ball to Reese Nesting, who fired a shot into the top left corner of the goal for the game’s only score.

Coach Leonel Alvarado said, “Our boys showed what they can do when they stay focused. All around, the team performed as a unit.”

The Mustangs will travel to Goddard Eisenhower on Tuesday and to Andover on Thursday to finish their season.
