Sturgeon homers but Wind Surge falls short

WICHITA The Wind Surge fell short to the San Antonio Missions 4-2 on Saturday night behind a strong start on the mound from Mission’s right-hander Thomas Eshelman as the Surge lost their second straight.

Thomas Eshelman got the start on the mound for the Missions and pitched five innings and allowed two runs on six hits and tallied three strikeouts to earn his third win of the season.

Cole Sturgeon got the Surge on the board in the second inning as he hit a solo home run to tie the game 1-1. Sturgeon finished the night two for five with an RBI and Kevin Merrell added to the tally as he went two for three in the ballgame.

San Antonio took the lead again in the fifth inning as Juan Fernandez reached on a fielder’s choice that allowed a runner to score. Thomas Milone scored courtesy of a sacrifice fly from Yorman Rodriguez to take a 3-1 lead.

The Wind Surge had won the last nine Louie Varland starts but he took the loss, allowing three runs in five innings. 

Notes: Cole Sturgeon extended his hit streak to seven games… The Surge are now 10-25 when their opponent scores the game’s first run… The Surge left 11 men on base and were zero for seven with runners in scoring position.  Wichita is now 9-for-54 with runners in scoring position in the series.
